The challenge

Traditionally, depalletizing involves physically demanding and time-consuming manual labor. Workers often lift heavy and inconveniently shaped objects, alternating between standing up and bending down to accommodate the goods being relocated. This increases risk of injury, and these types of roles often involve high turnover of personnel.

Automation reduces the need for human involvement, even in 'simple' depalletization and stacking scenarios. Inconsistently stacked products, and variance in item types, sizes and materials, increase the likelihood of bad picks and poor stacking.

Automated depalletizing keeps employees safe while removing bottlenecks to keep items and production lines moving. Simply move the pallet into position and let the depalletizer go to work.

Active implementations

DHL Ecommerce: Fizyr, AWL and Vanderlande partnered on a robotic application that picks and places parcels from randomly mixed pallets onto the conveyor belts of sorting installations.

Arvato Supply Chain Solutions: In collaboration with AWL and Fizyr, Arvato implemented its depalletizing robot, Stark, which places up to 750 different cartons per hour on a conveyor belt.
