Mixed item and mixed SKU pallets create real challenges for automation, due to inconsistencies in size, shape, weight and material. Uniform items, in neat, tidy stacks are easy. When stacking is perfect, and the variety of item types varies, advanced vision can segment, identify grasp priority and grasp poses, provide placement guidance and more.
Fizyr OS vision allows once-challenging depalletization and palletization problems to be solved to be solved.

The challenge
Traditionally, depalletizing involves physically demanding and time-consuming manual labor. Workers often lift heavy and inconveniently shaped objects, alternating between standing up and bending down to accommodate the goods being relocated. This increases risk of injury, and these types of roles often involve high turnover of personnel.
Automation reduces the need for human involvement, even in 'simple' depalletization and stacking scenarios. Inconsistently stacked products, and variance in item types, sizes and materials, increase the likelihood of bad picks and poor stacking.
Automated depalletizing keeps employees safe while removing bottlenecks to keep items and production lines moving. Simply move the pallet into position and let the depalletizer go to work.
Advanced vision allows automation to reduce labor challenges
Time constraints and order fulfillment demands place pressure on companies to expedite the picking process. As more offer next-day and same-day shipping, customer expectations for swift deliveries and short turnaround times grow.
With labor markets becoming more competitive and wages rising, companies face increased expenses associated with recruiting, training and retaining a reliable workforce. Moreover, workers are constrained by physical limitations, such as speed and endurance, which restrict the throughput and scalability of manual item picking operations.

Fizyr OS enables automation cells to go beyond dealing with easy, perfect pallets. Systems can efficiently depalletize items that are a mix of package types, and those that have gone through real world transport processes, shifting within pallets while in-transit.

Fizyr OS has the native ability to capture visual data on blocked and partially 'unseen' objects. This allows the system to interpret issues with picking and obstacles to pathing and successful placement
Items in all industry verticals and use cases must keep moving, get 'placed' for the next step in the process. Without advanced vision, automation of operations leads to poor KPIs

DHL Ecommerce: Fizyr, AWL and Vanderlande partnered on a robotic application that picks and places parcels from randomly mixed pallets onto the conveyor belts of sorting installations.
Arvato Supply Chain Solutions: In collaboration with AWL and Fizyr, Arvato implemented its depalletizing robot, Stark, which places up to 750 different cartons per hour on a conveyor belt.
AVT Heavy Bag Depalletizing: Integrating Fizyr’s Vision AI into its robotic cell for depalletizing unlocked AVT’s ability to pick and place heavy bags with great success, a task which had been considered impossible. See it in action.
